Four Voices: Acoustic super-group out for rare tour

Emily Saliers has been one half of Indigo Girls for three decades, but her creativity isn’t limited to that Grammy-winning duo. Since 1991, she and musical partner Amy Ray have occasionally moonlighted alongside Joan Baez and Mary Chapin Carpenter as part of Four Voices, the acoustic super-group performing at Fraze Pavilion in Kettering on Thursday, June 8.

Saliers called recently from pre-tour rehearsals in Atlanta to discuss Four Voices, Indigo Girls and the release of her debut solo album in August.

SONIC EXPLORERS

“Amy and I never got stuck in a rut. We honor each other’s lives separate from Indigo Girls. There’s always somebody cool to work with or a new project. It’s a rich life of opportunity for exploring things through music.”

DON’T MISS THIS: A must-see ‘castle’ is just an hour’s drive from Dayton.

MAKING TIME FOR MAGIC

“We go back a long way and we’re all friends but we don’t get to do Four Voices that often because everybody is busy. Chapin was just in the UK recording a new album. Joan was just on the West Coast making her album. Amy and I are listening to tracks for our Indigo Girls symphony album, which should be out early next year. My solo album comes out in August so we’re really fortunate we’re able to set aside this time to tour. It’s going to be a thrill to be back on stage together again.”

HAPPY TOGETHER

“It’s definitely emotional when we all sing together. There’s a deep sense of reverence for each other. We’re happy to be together. The songs are emotional and we’re working really hard to hammer out the parts. It’s a very impactful experience and tiring, too. You’re wiped out at the end of the day. You’re ready to rest until the next day comes.”

LIMITED RUN TOUR

“I don’t know when the next opportunity will be to get the four of us together again. We’re only doing 10 dates on this tour so for us, and hopefully for people out there, this is a rare musical experience. We’re very excited about it. We can’t wait to come to Fraze Pavilion in Kettering.”

A SOLO GROOVE

“We’re about to officially announce the release of my solo album. We’re putting together my tour dates for fall and putting a band together. There are elements of R&B and world music. At its root, it’s very rhythmic-centered with really strong drums and bass and a lot of groove or vibe. There aren’t tons of harmony like are typical of Indigo Girls records. I’m really pleased with the way the album turned out.”
