If you think the spirit of international unity and competition ended with the Olympics, think again.

Dayton's own World Soccer Games will take the field on Sept. 17, bringing together youth and adult teams representing communities throughout the region, including immigrant communities.

The tournament sprang from the Welcome Dayton initiative, the City of Dayton’s “Immigrant Friendly City” initiative.

Last year, 25 teams participated in the day-long event, including teams representing nearly 20 European, African, Middle Eastern, Latin American and Asian nations, communities and several “USA” teams.

By the tournament’s end, Africa United and the diverse International team emerged as winners, but everyone left with a stronger sense of Dayton’s diversity and unity.

The 2016 event is the fifth installment of the games and promises to be the biggest yet. Sponsors include Dayton International Airport, the Dayton Department of Water, NAACP, DASA Youth Soccer and Kettering Sports Medicine. Spectator admission is free; please bring sports seating.
