Breast cancer deaths have fallen 34 percent since 1990, according to the American Cancer Society, a decline largely attributed to early detection and better treatments. The disease, though, continues to strike an estimated 232,340 females each year and 2,240 males, reflecting a rate that’s been fairly stable in recent years. It remains the No. 1 cancer killer of women at around 40,000 per year.
The Dayton area’s two health systems, Premier Health and Kettering Health Network, offer a full array of breast cancer services that patients can access through any of their member hospitals. Patients also have numerous private physician groups and treatment centers at their disposal here, as well as similar facilities in Cincinnati, Springfield and Columbus. Choosing a facility depends on numerous factors.
“So much of a woman’s breast cancer journey is with her medical professionals,” said Dr. Melissa P. Roelle, a breast surgeon and medical director of the High Risk Breast Cancer Center at Miami Valley Hospital South. “That’s really the most important part in a woman’s care — her relationship with her physicians, probably more than a hospital per se.”

All KHN hospitals offer breast cancer surgery.
Chemotherapy, biotherapy, targeted therapy, and hormone therapy are available at Kettering, Sycamore, Grandview, Greene Memorial and Fort Hamilton. Chemotherapy will soon be offered at Soin Medical Center. Many of these treatment regimens can be done on an outpatient basis.
Radiation therapy is available at Kettering, Greene Memorial and Fort Hamilton. HDR brachytherapy and stereotactic radiosurgery are available at Kettering. In treating women who have cancer in the left breast, we use a state-of-the-art radiation technique called respiratory gating that synchronizes the delivery of radiation to the part of a woman’s breathing cycle when her breast is farthest away from her heart. This allows precision radiotherapy that eliminates any significant radiation dose to a woman’s heart, thus substantially decreasing her risk of cardiac complications in the future.
