Barring any accidents or significant mechanical failures, Dick Dunlevy Jr., Tyler Mahaffey and Bo Hoelscher are feeling pretty good about their chances of winning track titles at Kil-Kare Speedway.

New Carlisle’s Dunlevy leads the late models by 40 points, Dayton’s Mahaffey leads the sport stocks by 46 and Riverside’s Hoelscher leads the compacts by 113.

Then there’s the modified division. Xenia’s Ryan Fleming holds a six-point lead over Germantown’s Bill Burba. They’ve combined to capture 10 of the 13 features (Mike Carroll has the other three), including Fleming’s sixth win last week.

“It’s still a little too early in the season to be thinking about that,” Fleming said of a points title. “It is cool because we’ve won more features this year than we have my entire career.”

Fleming, in his third season at Kil-Kare, has finished second in the modified points for two years.

Burba — coming off a modified win at Shady Bowl Speedway last Saturday — said he’s not focused on the points. He just wants wins.

“I’m just here to race every weekend, that’s all I’m out here to do. Win as many races as I can,” said Burba, who is also second in modified points at Shady Bowl to Troy’s Greg Stapleton.

“I’ve been struggling with the car the last couple weeks, trying to get it figured back out. I had a pretty bad crash two weeks ago and that almost put us out for the year.”

That’s not the worst crash Burba has had, though. He raced motocross on the AMA circuit for 15 years before switching to four wheels in 2004.

“Too many broken bones and injuries,” he cited as the reason for getting out of the sport.

Hot laps

• Ohio Sprint Speedweek concludes with two shows this weekend: Tonight at Limaland Motorsports Park and Saturday at Fremont Speedway. Tim Shaffer led Dale Blaney by two points heading into Thursday’s action at Hilltop Speedway in Millersburg.

• Moler Raceway Park in Williamsburg is pushing tonight’s starting time back one hour because of the heat. Hot laps for the Holman Motors Firecracker 400 will start at 8 with racing at 8:30.
