Performance by Gay Men’s Chorus was moving

Hats off to Jason Schuler, artistic director of the Dayton Gay Men’s Chorus, and to the chorus itself for providing a wonderful tribute to America and her armed forces. On June 5, the Victoria Theatre was filled with heartfelt sentiment and song. The DGMC performed such numbers as “America the Beautiful,” “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” and “Armed Forces Medley,” while also paying tribute to the struggle during slavery, and folksy tunes sung during the early periods of the United States.

The 400-plus audience at the Victoria experienced moments of wow, tears from patriotic melodies, and a little laughter along the way. The chorus’ five-part harmony and synchronizing blend of 27 gifted male voices, expressed — through song — America’s past struggles and victories as a nation striving for freedom and equality. It’s an effort that still persists today as the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community continues its battle for equality.

It is my prayer that at the end of the performance, the audience felt a renewed sense of pride in our country, but with a better understanding about the GLBT community and its continued struggle for equality and freedom within our great nation.
