TROY — The Troy Aquatic Park is hoping to have a new drop slide — which will drop people into the pool’s deep end from about 15 feet high — for its 2011 season.
The Troy City Council gave a first reading Jan. 19 on an ordinance that would approve soliciting bids on the new tube drop slide. The slide is estimated to cost about $110,000. The final price tag will be determined after the council approves the ordinance and begins the bidding process, said Carrie Slater, Troy’s assistant director of recreation.
The slide will need to be custom-built for the pool and would not be installed until the pool closes in September, Slater said. Construction and installation is estimated to take three to four months, she said.
The drop slide will have water running through it, and allow children to climb a ladder, sit down and drop right into the pool, Slater said. The fiberglass slide would have no curves and stop several feet above the water. She said drop slides are popular items in many of the newer swimming facilities being built.
Money for the project was approved in the city’s 2010 budget, but the council needs to give authority to solicit for bids, said Ken Siler, Troy’s recreation director. The goal is to create another fun feature at the facility to bring patrons to the park, he said. Last year they finished “$10,000 to the good,” he said. They sell about 500 season passes yearly and average between 40,000 and 42,000 people annually, depending upon weather, he said.
The Aquatic Park is already accepting season pass applications and work applications. The season opens May 29, during Memorial Day weekend. The park, located at 460 Staunton Drive, has two existing slides at the shallow end of the pool, one an enclosed tube slide and one an open slide. There is also a children’s water playground, a diving area and toddler pool and concessions.
