JUST IN: 2 young actresses selected to play Lulu during Dayton run of ‘Waitress’

Two local young actresses are about to get a jump start on their acting careers with a role in a Broadway musical  coming to town.

Vivian King, a 4-year-old from Oakwood, and Teagen Krekus, a 3½-year-old from Lebanon, have been selected to alternate turns playing the role of “Lulu,” the daughter of “Waitress” lead character, Jenna. The young actresses will play Lulu in the production’s final scene during its Dayton engagement from June 25 to June 30 at the Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center.

King is “wildly excited for her theatrical debut. She loves singing, dancing, creating, gymnastics, horseback and martial arts,” according to a Victoria Theatre press release. Krekus will also be making her theater debut and “is ecstatic to have the opportunity,” the press release said.

The young girls were selected in April at the Dayton auditions held by a panel of production staff from “Waitress.” The role of Lulu is traditionally cast with a young, local actress in each market the production is visiting.

A Tony-nominated Broadway hit that is making its way to Dayton is missing one very important actress — and you might know who it is.

“Waitress” the musical is premiering at the Benjamin & Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center from June 25 through June 30. The show is looking for two young girls to perform the role of “Lulu” for the duration of the engagement.

“The character of Lulu is a sweet and carefree 4 to 5-year-old who appears in the production’s final scene,” according to a Victoria Theatre Association press release. “Qualified young girls should be shorter than 4’2” and be no older than 5 years and 6 months. Individual applicants are welcome, as are sets of twins or siblings. Space is limited to the first 60 applicants to sign up.”

Lulu auditions will take place at 1 p.m. May 19 at the PNC Arts Annex in downtown Dayton and will last approximately 3 hours. Auditions will consists of the child reading two lines from the show and while prior acting experience is not required, parents should try to bring a current head shot and resume for their child. To sign up for an audition time, visit signupgenius.com.

The role of Lulu is traditionally cast with a young, local actress in each market the production is visiting. Two girls will be chosen from Dayton and each will perform in four performances during the one-week engagement.

“Inspired by Adrienne Shelley’s beloved film, ‘Waitress’ tells the story of Jenna – a waitress and expert pie maker. Jenna dreams of a way out of her small town and loveless marriage,” according to a VTA press release. “A baking contest in a nearby county and the town’s new doctor may offer her a chance at a fresh start, while her fellow waitresses offer their own recipes for happiness. But Jenna must summon the strength and courage to rebuild her own life.”
