You can do Urban Yoga all day long at this retreat

Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Tantric Hatha, Baptiste and, even power yoga — the Urban Yoga Movement is a one-stop shop for all things yoga, but the daylong retreat is much more than that.

“It was designed as a way to grow the yoga community in Dayton, but it’s also about celebrating learning, peace and growth,” said organizer Tom Helbig, of Tomfoolery Outdoors. “I think it has definitely exceeded our expectations.”

The Urban Yoga Movement – in its third year – has a new home, as WellSpace, 116 N. Jefferson St., and will host the retreat on Jan. 6, starting at 8 a.m.

“As far as partnering with WellSpace, it’s such a great opportunity,” Helbig said. “We could not be more aligned as far as trying to build community. It’s about the impact an event like this can have personally – for those who attend – and collectively for the community.”

WellSpace founder and managing partner Matt Parente will be one of 10 instructors and presenters who will participate in the event that is geared for beginners and experienced yogis alike. Last year’s event brought in approximately 100 participants of varying ability and experience.

“It really is geared for just about anybody,” Parente said. “No matter what your yoga experience, just being around all of these people, there will just be such great energy. Everybody thrives on making new connections and this will be a perfect opportunity to do that.”

Hosting the Urban Yoga Movement is a perfect fit for WellSpace, which opened its doors in Downtown Dayton earlier this year.

“Our vision is to bring people together and promote health and wellness,” Parente said. “This event will help people connect through yoga.”

From relaxation to stress relief and increased flexibility to improved posture, yoga benefits the mind as well as the body. The Urban Yoga Movement participants will have options throughout the day to challenge their body, by taking part in an active class, or choose an educational or meditative session to challenge their mind. All instructors are local, representing various yoga studios from around the Miami Valley.

“I tell every beginner to try a dozen different instructors because there are so many different styles,” Parente said. “You can try almost that many in just one day here.”
