Car-into-building accident count hits 106

Two more accidents over the last two days brings the number of vehicle-structure accidents in 2015 to 106.

On December 15, there were 4 of these incidents in one day, bringing to count from 100 to 104.

Over the summer, we saw a spike in these types of collisions, and predicted that we would have over 100 accidents by the end of the year.

Though the incidents occurred less frequently in September and October, a sudden increase in November and now December has made this prediction a reality.

There were 105 of these types of accidents by this time in 2014, and 103 by this time in 2013.

Many think these are mainly caused by winter-type weather, but 49 of this year's incidents occurred in the spring and summer months.

Former NewsCenter 7 anchor John Paul, who was fascinated by the trend during his time in Dayton, actually found that Florida (known for its mild weather) surpasses Ohio for the state with the most car into building crashes.

This begs the question of what actually causes these accidents. The graph below shows the location and details of this year's incidents, and sleepiness, alcohol, mechanical issues, and unlicensed drivers have been listed as causes.

Texting could also be a major cause, but is difficult to prove, so is not often listed on reports.

The Dayton Fire Department created its own code for this type of accident, AUTOHSE, in 2013. At the time, the interim fire chief said he could not explain why so many vehicles run into homes and buildings in this area.
