One person is dead and S. Main Street in Centerville was closed after a construction vehicle carrying roofing material hit a pedestrian Tuesday afternoon.

According to Centerville police Officer John Davis, the crash was reported shortly after 3 p.m.

Davis said that a medium-duty construction delivery vehicle was driving north on South Main Street when it fatally struck the pedestrian in the 800 block.

The pedestrian’s identity is not being released while police work to contact the victim’s family.

The driver of the truck remained on scene and has been cooperative, Davis said, adding that the crash was an accident.

When asked if the road was considered unsafe for pedestrians, he said it wasn’t, adding, “This is a very unusual incident for us.”

The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office had responded to the scene but has since left.

A reconstruction of the crash was underway, and Davis said the road would likely be closed another two hours.

In a post to social media, police announced that the road had reopened at 6:51 p.m.
