Bellbrook hires new police chief

Bellbrook has hired Douglas “Doug” Doherty as the new city police chief, according to information released by city officials this week.

Doherty, a Beavercreek resident, will start his new position on March 3 earning an annual salary of $94,890.

“The City of Bellbrook is privileged to have Doug Doherty as our next police chief,” said Bellbrook City Manager Mark Schlagheck in a written statement. “Doug’s experience and leadership skills will allow the Bellbrook Police Department to continue providing excellent service to the residents of Bellbrook.”

The city police department’s $1.7 million budget accounts for 25 percent of the city’s $6.7 million annual budget. The police chief is responsible for 13 full-time officers, one part-time officer and two administrative positions in the records department.

Doherty was hired about four months after the city launched its search for a new police chief in mid-October. The search was initiated after Bellbrook Police Chief David Helling, 55, submitted written notice he planned to retire in March. Helling earns $102,710 per year, according to city data.

Doherty is a Dayton/Englewood area native, and has 25 years of law enforcement experience. He started his career as a reserve officer with Madison Twp. Police Department in 1989. About a year later, he was hired as officer with the Xenia Police Department where he was promoted to captain in 2003.

“I look forward to serving the citizens of Bellbrook and becoming a part of this community,” Doherty said. “I am thankful to follow Chief Helling, who set a high standard for the Bellbrook Police Department. My commitment to the City of Bellbrook, its citizens, and the proud members of the Bellbrook Police Department will be on display every day, as I work hard for all of you.”
