Confusion over Facebook post causes panic, prompts active shooter investigation at area college

A Facebook post from a Wilmington police department referencing a manhunt caused panic and prompted officers to investigate if there was an active shooter at Wilmington College Wednesday morning.

Police responded to the college after receiving the 911 calls. College staff were not aware of any incidents.

Police discovered that the Facebook post was referencing Wilmington, Illinois, and not Wilmington, Ohio, according to the Ohio Wilmington police department.

Officials are asking that everyone clarify any news feeds before sharing or forwarding them to prevent scares.

The Wilmington Police Department assures that their Facebook page clearly states they are based in Ohio and hopes that this will clarify and keep from confusion in the future.
