Man shot, killed by deputies after attempting to strike officer, flee identified

A Dayton man was shot and killed by a Montgomery County Sheriff Deputy on Saturday after attempting to strike a deputy with his car, according to the sheriff’s office.

Gary Brown, 43, died hours after the incident.

Montgomery County Coroner Kent Harshbarger said Brown died from a gunshot wound to the chest.  His death was ruled a homicide.

Police initially responded to a report of a suspicious parked car at La Crosse Avenue and Ontario Avenue in Harrison Twp. around 1 p.m. Saturday.

Crews arrived on scene to find a person, later identified as Brown, in the back seat of the vehicle, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators say the person in the vehicle jumped into the front seat and attempted to drive away from the scene. He then struck an deputy with his car while attempting to drive away.

A second deputy reportedly opened gunfire and hit the Brown after the first deputy was struck, according to Sheriff Rob Streck.

Both deputies were taken to the hospital and later released.
