Farr was part of a chain-reaction crash on Interstate 75 in Shelby County that involved four semitrailers and a pickup truck. Taken by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital, it’s likely Farr’s injuries would have been fatal — if not for his decision to buckle up.

“Ronald is a living testimony to the effectiveness of safety belts,” Lieutenant Joseph Gebhart of the Piqua Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said. “Everyone needs to buckle up every trip, every time.”

In 2018, 419 people in Ohio were killed in traffic crashes where a safety belt was available, but not in use.

The “Saved by the Belt” Club is a joint effort by the Ohio Department of Public Safety and more than 400 Ohio law enforcement agencies. This club is designed to recognize people who have benefited from their decision to wear safety belts.

Farr was presented with the “Saved by the Belt” award and license plate bracket Monday afternoon by Gebhart and investigating officer trooper Charles Burton.
