Red Cross offers tips to keep safe in the water this spring, summer

Knowing how to safely enjoy bodies of water will be helpful when you, your family and friends decide to recreate this spring and summer, whether in a pool, a lake or a river.

As we approach Memorial Day weekend, the American Red Cross reminds us that drowning is a leading cause of death for children.

And with all the rain that has hit the region this spring, water recreation becomes increasingly dangerous when water levels rise.

“You would be surprised the number of people who completely underestimate their abilities when the water is high and the water is fast,” said Jim Otte, WHIO reporter.

For precautionary measures, the American Red Cross offers three tips to improve your water safety knowledge:

  • Ensure everyone in your family learns to swim at least to the level of competency
  • Employ layers of protection such as life jackets, and close supervision of children
  • Know what to do in a water emergency, such as administering CPR and calling for help an emergency
