Chris Whitman was heading south to check on his wife when he said he saw one of the tornadoes.

Remembering instructions from when he was young, Whitman got out of his car so he could try and get to a ditch.

In the process of trying to reach safety, he was hit by what he assumes was a tree and knocked unconscious.

Whitman regained consciousness to find himself in the ditch.

The pain was so bad he had to lie on the ground, Whitman said.

A state trooper pulled up and flagged down another driver who rushed Whitman to the hospital.

“Just him comforting me and being there and letting me know it was going to be OK because at that point the pain had set in and I didn’t know how badly I was injured,” he said.

Whitman said he has a serious concussion and a ruptured disk, but he was back to work as an Uber driver Thursday because he doesn’t have health insurance.
