After an investigation, crews determined that a coal silo that helps supply power to the plant collapsed under its own weight, the West Carrollton Fire Department said.
Satish Damodaran, a middle manager at Appleton's West Carrollton facility, said the plant will halt operations while the cause of the accident is determined. The shutdown is only a safety precaution, as the factory could be run using backup equipment and an alternate silo.
"The bunkers and coal can be replaced," Damodaran said. "The people cannot."
No one was injured in the collapse or response.
Damodaran expects only a short suspension of production at the facility.
