Hamilton police investigating fatal shooting

UPDATE, 3:17 p.m.: A frantic woman called 911 about 3:40 a.m. today, saying that Calvin Simmons Jr. was bleeding and had been shot in the stomach and somewhere else in the University Boulevard residence.

In the more than 7 1/2-minute 911 call, the woman told dispatchers that two men came through the back door, one of the men was in all black clothing, wearing a black hoodie, wearing latex gloves, jewelry and a mask from a Scream movie.

Dispatchers tried to calm the woman and asked her often to check if Simmons, 37, was still breathing. The woman said the other man was wearing a black hoodie and wearing black gloves and jewelry. She said one of the men put a gun in her mouth and threatened her.

UPDATE, 2:41 p.m.: The Butler County Coroner's Office ruled the fatal shooting of Calvin Simmons Jr. as a homicide with the primary cause of death as a gunshot wound. The coroner reported an autopsy was conducted.

UPDATE, 2:26 p.m.: Hamilton police Chief Craig Bucheit has spoken with the family of Calvin Simmons Jr. and said via email, "They are devastated by this loss."

Bucheit said, “I have pledged our full efforts at finding those responsible and at continuing our work on ending the violence that has claimed the lives of too many young men in the 2nd and 4th wards.”

UPDATE, 1:00 p.m.: Calvin Simmons Jr. is the brother of Hamilton Truth & Life Church Pastor Shaquila Mathews. Mathews has been active not only in the pulpit but in the community, promoting peace and better relations with the police department and residents of the city.

Mathews told the Journal-News that she is appreciative of the prayers and concerns for her family that have been shared by many in after her brother’s death.

INITIAL REPORT: Hamilton police are investigating the overnight fatal shooting of a University Boulevard resident.

Police were called at 3:45 a.m. to the residence of Calvin Simmons Jr., 37, where he was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the stomach. He was transported to Fort Hamilton Hospital, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.

Investigators are actively involved with the investigation at this time. Sgt. Brian Robinson said police are stressing this was not a random act and it is believed that Simmons was targeted. No arrests had been made at this time as of 10 a.m.
