Former WSU instructor accused of sex crimes involving young child in Fairborn

Jonathan Curtis Varhola, 39, was arrested Tuesday by U.S. Marshals at his home in Savage, Md., and returned Wednesday to Ohio, where he was booked into the Greene County Jail.

The Fairborn Police Department began an investigation in late 2018 into possible sex crimes against young children. 

As a result of the investigation, Varhola was indicted on five counts of rape and five counts of gross sexual imposition involving a young child, according to Fairborn police.

Varhola had moved to Maryland from the Miami Valley.

During his time at WSU, Varhola presented a paper on college student perceptions of sex offenders at the Midwest Sociological Society conference in Chicago, according to the university’s Spring 2013 Sociology/Anthropology newsletter. Varhola also had plans for a seminar on sex offenders and the law, the newsletter stated.
