Johnson was driving a green 2001 Mercury Cougar east on state Route 122 around 3 p.m. when he struck a pedestrian crossing signal and traveled east in the westbound lanes. He then struck a blue 1999 Ford Explorer, driven by 83-year-old Beechum U. Richardson of Middletown, who was headed west on Ohio 122. The Mercury continued for about 500 feet before coming to rest against a guardrail, the highway patrol said.

Johnson was taken to Atrium Medical Center in Middletown, where he was pronounced dead.

Richardson suffered minor injuries in the crash and went to Atrium Medical Center with a family member.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts.

The crash blocked two of three lanes of Ohio 122, and only one lane was open headed west following the crash, which remains under investigation by the highway patrol.
