Scam Alert: Montgomery County prosecutor warns of fake calls claiming to come from office

Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck Jr. is warning the public about scam calls from a person claiming to be from his office.

A local corrections officer reported the scam to the prosecutor’s office after receiving a call that claimed she was connected to a criminal case in Montgomery County.

The caller gave her a case number and told her to call immediately because charges had not been filed yet, according to the prosecutor’s office.

The caller said they were Elizabeth Thomas from the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office.

The prosecutor’s office will never call a person and tell them to call a toll-free number, Heck said.

Montgomery County Common Pleas Court case numbers follow a xxxx-CR-xxxx format, with the first four numbers being the year the case started, according to the prosecutor's office.

Anyone who thinks they’re being scammed should call the Montgomery County Prosecutor's Consumer Fraud Unit at 937-225-4747 and ask for a fraud investigator.
