Scam Alert: Sheriff’s office warns of caller threatening arrest if fake bond isn’t paid

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a scam caller pretending to be a sheriff’s captain and claiming there’s a warrant out for the recipient’s arrest.

The caller claims to be a Capt. Jay Wheeler and says if the resident must pay their bond with a credit card over the phone or another payment if they don’t want to be arrested.

"These scammers can be very convincing and while in hindsight it may be easy to blame the victims, please keep in mind that these ruthless scammers are very successful at targeting people from all walks of life and age groups," said Sheriff Rob Streck.

Some scam callers will clone phone numbers to look legitimate. Residents have reported receiving the same scam call from multiple phone numbers.

The sheriff’s office will never call residents and threaten arrest for unpaid fines, warrants and missed court dates, according to the sheriff’office.

Anyone who receives a similar call should hang up and report it to their local police department.
