Sheriff: Massage, comments led to suspension for sergeant and union president

A Butler County Sheriff’s Office sergeant will serve a two-week suspension for violating workplace harassment policies, according to Sheriff Richard K. Jones.

The disciplinary action was taken Tuesday against Sgt Jeff Gebhart, who is also the FOP union president. The action came after multiple complaints of actions and comments, according to the sheriff.

In addition to the suspension, Gebhart has also signed a last-chance agreement that would lead to his immediate termination if there are any further violations of the department’s workplace policy, the sheriff said. He will also undergo remedial training.

“We take these incidents very serious. While the Sergeant admitted the allegations were true, he stated he did not intend to offend any of the employees and understands how some were affected,” Jones said.

Jones said the department has training concerning its workplace harassment policy and “we expect a high standard from our employees, and when there is a violation of the policy, it doesn’t matter who you are there is swift action.

“It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, you have to send a message that it won’t be tolerated in the workplace.”

Female co-workers made complaints about comments, and there was also an incident during which Gebhart received a neck massage involving co-workers using a roller, Jones said.

“There is nothing criminal here,” Jones said. “This is words and actions that made people uncomfortable enough to complain.”

Jones said Gebhart is a longtime employee with at least 26 years with the department.
