Dragons stadium adding giant HD video board

The Dayton Dragons have purchased a 2,050-square-foot, high-definition video board for installation at Fifth Third Field, team officials announced Wednesday.

The video board, which will be operational by the Dragons’ opening day game on April 12, will provide the clearest picture quality of any board at a minor league baseball venue, officials said.

Officials said the cost of the entire video board project exceeds $1 million.

Last year, the Dragons invested more than $1.2 million to upgrade the ballpark’s entertainment control room and add HD cameras throughout the facility.

The new video board will be one of the first “13HD” video boards at a minor league ballpark, official said. Only three Major League Baseball and eight National Football League stadiums feature 13HD video boards.

The new video board measures 35 feet high and 65 feet wide, making it the tallest and widest board in single-A baseball, and among the top five tallest and widest at any minor league stadium.

The new board will have five times more display area than the previous video board at Fifth Third Field. It also will be three times brighter than its predecessor, officials said.

“The video board at Fifth Third Field is so very critical to the Dayton Dragons entertainment experience,” said Robert Murphy, Dragons team president, in a statement. “To be able to enhance and improve the experience for our fans is very exciting,” he said.

The Dragons open their 16th season in the Midwest League on April 9 at West Michigan. The team opens its home season at Fifth Third Field on April 12 versus South Bend.
