Many stray animals end up at the Fairborn animal shelter. Last year, the facility handled approximately 550 cats and investigators said more than 70 percent of them were euthenized.
Capt. Doc Plemmons said requiring a cat license would be an insurance policy for cat owners. If a cat gets loose, the cat can be returned. Plemmons also said the license would create revenue for the city.
Plemmons said a year and a half ago, the city of Fairborn was forced to reduce revenue and that meant cutting the animal control program.
Since the cat license is just an idea, there are no details on how it would be enforced. However, Plemmons said the current rules for dogs would probably be used as a blueprint.
Fairborn Council members have tabled the idea for now. But, it will be up for discussion again this time next year.
