Fire Koneta Rubber Facility Wapak Quickly Controlled

A piece of hot rubber at the bottom of a grinder used to grind rubber could be to blame for a fire Tuesday night at the Park Street grinding facility for Koneta Rubber Inc.

The fire suppression system did its job tonight said Wapakoneta Fire Chief Kendall Krites. When the rubber still in the grinder ignites "it set off a sprinkler head, it held the fire at bay, and set off an alarm," said Chief Krites, sending the fire department to the scene.

Thick black smoke was seen coming from the building. Neighbor fire departments from Botkins and Buckland were dispatched as mutual aid. A short time later they were released from the Wapakoneta scene.

There were no injuries.

The fire damage was confined to the grinder and a conveyer blet.

Koneta Rubber manufactures mud flaps, bedmats for trucks and floor savers.

The alarm sounder at 8:52 p.m.
