Former Auburn football coach Tommy Tuberville running for U.S. Senate 

Former Auburn University football coach Tommy Tuberville said he is running for the U.S. Senate.

Tuberville, 64, made the announcement Saturday on Twitter. He will run as a Republican and seek the Alabama seat held by Sen. Doug Jones, a Democrat who is running for reelection, according to

“After more than a year of listening to Alabama’s citizens, I have heard your concerns and hopes for a better tomorrow. I am humbled to announce the next step -- I will be a GOP candidate for US Senate,” Tuberville tweeted.

Tuberville coached at Auburn from 1999 to 2008, compiling a 85-40 record in 10 seasons. He led the Tigers to a 13-0 record in 2004. Before coming to Auburn, Tuberville coached at the University of Mississippi from 1995 to 1998 and went 25-20. He also coached at Texas Tech (2010-2012), where he went 20-17; and at the University of Cincinnati (2013-2016), where he was 29-22. His overall college coaching record is 159-99.
