FRESH BREW: New craft-beer growler-fill option opens on Far Hills Ave.

The success of the craft-beer growler-refill system at one Shell station and convenience store has inspired another Shell station nearby to install its own.

The Washington Square Shell store at Far Hills Avenue (Ohio 48) and Whipp Road in Washington Twp. unveiled its new 15-tap growler-refill system this week, store owner Mona Olich told this news outlet. The Washington Square station is located two miles south of the Town & Country Shell station on Far Hills Avenue and Stroop Road in Kettering, which has offered craft beer growler refills since December 2015.

The Washington Twp. Shell will carry beers from Dayton-area breweries, other Ohio breweries, and craft breweries from other regions, Olich said. Among its opening-week selections are Yellow Springs Brewery’s Boat Show IPA, Toxic Brew Company’s ISO Heaven, Warped Wing Brewing Company’s Ermal’s Cream Ale, Bell’s Octoberfest, and Southern Tier’s Pumking.

The craft-beer tap system the store installed removes oxygen from the beer container — usually a 64-ounce “growler” or a 32-ounce “howler” — extending the beer’s shelf life for the customer, Olich said. The containers are sealed with tape after they’re filled and are not sold for consumption inside the store.

The Shell station will become the second business in the Washington Square retail center to offer craft beer on tap. The nearby Dorothy Lane Market offers eight craft beers on tap at its grocery store a few hundred feet from the Shell station.
