Fire officials said they believe that lighting may be to blame for the fire; however, that has not been confirmed. No one was injured in the fire.

Firefighters from Darke, Miami and Montgomery counties responded to the scene.

According to the Miami County Auditor's records, the house alone is valued at $130,000. It was built in 1860. Fire officials said the house is considered a total loss.

Fire officials said the man who lived in the home with his elderly mother managed to escape the flames.

Capt. Dan Baker with the Laura Fire Department said, "It appears the fire may have been burning for some time before being noticed."

The structure used to be the old Potsdam School and had been remodeled many times over the years.
