Kroger holding job fairs Saturday to fill 1,200 area jobs

The Kroger Co. will hold four area job fairs Saturday as the grocer strives to fill 1,200 available jobs at local stores by the end of the month.

As planned, Kroger is holding the job fairs following the September announcement of a major hiring push nationwide. Plans are to hire 20,000 people in permanent positions across a 34-state footprint to accommodate growing sales.

In the Cincinnati/Dayton Division, spanning more than 100 grocery stores from Northern Kentucky to Springfield, approximately 1,200 jobs are open, according to Rachael Betzler, Kroger spokeswoman.

The hiring events are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at these locations:

• Tri-County Financial Services, 130 Tri-County Parkway, Springdale;

• The Holiday Inn Eastgate, 4501 Eastgate Blvd., Union Twp. in Clermont County;

• The Mandalay, 2700 East River Rd., Dayton; and

• The Mets Center, 3861 Olympic Blvd., Erlanger, Ky.

Kroger is hiring for evening and weekend positions including part-time associates for all departments. Also available are full-time chef positions, for which applicants must have a culinary degree, according to Betzler.

While it’s helpful for applicants to apply online before attending Saturday’s event, it’s not necessary, Betzler said. Submitting an online application speeds up the process, she said.

“More job fairs could follow pending the outcome this weekend,” she said in an email. “On-the-spot job interviews will happen at the job fair, so yes, it is a benefit to be there in person.”

United Food and Commercial Workers Local 75 represents about 17,700 Kroger employees in the Cincinnati-Dayton region.

“The bottom line is it’s always good when more people can get union jobs that guarantee annual raises and affordable benefits,” UFCW spokeswoman Brigid Kelly previously told this news outlet.

Presently Kroger employs more than 375,000 full- and part-time employees ringing up grocery orders at 2,640 supermarkets and multi-department stores in 34 states and Washington, D.C.

The food and drug retailer is Ohio’s third largest employer of 39,000 people, according to Ohio Development Services Agency.

The Fortune 500 grocer says its created more than 40,000 new jobs in the last six years — including 7,000 in 2013 — and not including construction jobs or the 25,000 employees that work for recently acquired Harris Teeter.
