Local Fire Department Earns Ohio EMS Grant

The West Carrollton fire department recently earned a $3,450 Ohio Emergency Medical Services grant from the Ohio Department of Public Safety.

The department said it plans to purchase a stair-chair for one of its ambulances with the award. The state grant money is awarded annually from fines collected when drivers receive a ticket for failure to wear a seatbelt.

The grant requires recipients to use the funds for non-disposable items. In past years, the department has purchased back boards and oxygen cylinders with the award money, according to Leanne Nash, West Carrollton’s EMS coordinator and fire prevention officer.

“The ironic part about the grants is that the amount has actually decreased in the past few years, because more people are paying attention and wearing their seatbelts,” she said.
