Local restaurants offer free & discounted food TODAY to take the chill off diners

Some Dayton-area restaurants are responding to the record-cold wind-chill temperatures by offering free or discounted soup and other warming items today, Jan. 30.

Here's how Lily's Bistro at 329 E.  Fifth St. in Dayton's Oregon Historic District described its offer of a free bowl of soup today only on its Facebook page and Instagram account yesterday afternoon:

This is a post about FREE SOUP for brave souls. ... Wednesday, January 30 is gonna be a real cold one. We love y'all and our staff loves to have people to take care of, so for one day only, we'll be offering a cup of complimentary soup with the purchase of any lunch or dinner meal. Just mention this post and we'll bring it out on the house to reward your fortitude.

The Lily’s Bistro Facebook post had generated nearly 200 likes (and loves) by 6 a.m. this morning.

And at mid-morning, Blind Bob's Bar across the street from Lily's made a similar offer of free soup with a meal, today only.

CoreLife Eatery's Centerville restaurant at 5201 Cornerstone North Blvd. announced its own offer on its Facebook page yesterday afternoon that is good today only: a 71 percent discount on its 12-ounce cups of bone broth, which regularly sell for $3.45, but will be available today for $1. Here's the full text of the CoreLife Eatery offer:

*POLAR VORTEX RESPONSE* Can't stand the cold? See what's simmering in our kitchen! On Jan 30 only, get a cup of our hot, flavor-filled bone broth for just $1! CoreLife Eatery: 1. Polar vortex: 0. Stop down! *Limit two 12 oz cups of bone broth per customer, for in-store purchase only.

The offer was warmly received, generating more than 275 likes/loves by this morning.

At Ollie's Place in Washington Twp., owner Mike Schwartz said is 50 percent off today, and alcohol is discounted 20 percent, until 9 p.m. on the restaurant side of the business, which also operates a beer-and-wine carryout.

And Wandering Griffin brewpub in Beavercreek is offering "happy hour" pricing all day, co-founder Brian Young said.

Of course, not all restaurants are staying open during the Polar Vortex. Table 33 in downtown Dayton and South Park Tavern in Dayton are among those that have announced on their Facebook pages that they will shut down today, Jan. 30.
