One local couple is starting something new on Old Street.

Tammy and Jeff Davis of Oxford will open Old Street Tattoo on Halloween, Oct. 31, in Monroe. The shop at 139 Old St. is their second: They opened Skin Addiction in Hamilton in 2003.

The Davises hope the holiday will bring a lot of foot traffic into the new store, which also will raffle off a $500 custom tattoo from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Customers will be able to get walk-in tattoos opening day as well as enjoy food and drinks. After that, Jeff said, tattooing will be by appointment only

Prices vary depending on the complexity of a tattoo, ranging from $100 for something simple to several thousand dollars for a large-scale back or sleeve piece.

But Old Street Tattoo is not just about getting inked. On the first floor of the shop, there will be an art gallery displaying locally-produced works for sale.

Each of the shop’s three tattoo artists also are painters.

Jeff, who got into tattoos when he was 19 and now has so many, “I can’t even begin to count them, it’s just one big one,” said he was always interested in art. His pencil sketches were a jumping point into tattooing and he has since used that as a springboard into painting.

While the economy has put pressure on the tattoo business, Jeff said he is hoping the new location and art offerings will bring in new clientele.

Tammy, who helps run the office side of the business, said the two shops help fulfill both their career dreams.

“I like being self-employed,” she said. “This is something (Jeff) has always wanted to do. And I have always wanted to be a business owner, so it worked out just fine.”
