Coupons lead to full shelves, big savings for Liberty Twp. woman

The Coupon Course will be offered by LifeSpan in Hamilton to help residents pinch more pennies.

LIBERTY TWP. — Her table is stacked high with bottles of shampoo, lotion, razors, boxes of crackers, cookies, rice, cereal and soup — all of which Erica Lee got for free.

And she wants to teach you how to do the same.

Lifespan will be offering Lee’s class, The Coupon Course, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, at the Hamilton office, 1900 Fairgrove Ave. The cost is $15 for the class only or $25 to receive the “Ready-to-Save Couponing Kit” which includes a coupon filing system, $25 in current coupons and a savings match-ups sheet.

Residents will learn to effectively and efficiently save more than 50 percent each week on grocery, household and personal care items.

With so many clients at LifeSpan having trouble making ends meet, Ruth “Peaches” Atha said the nonprofit agency is offering the class to help them find another way to save.

“We’re just trying to help people because everyone that is coming in is telling us they have reduced their budget as much as (they) can reduce,” she said.

Lee knows about tight budgets. The mother of one said she moved to Liberty Twp. six months ago only to find herself unemployed and trying to pay for a big, new house with just one income.

“I’m in a position I have never been in before and I think I can relate to a lot of people who are trying to do more with what they have and want to buy things without being frivolous,” she said.

Lee has the credentials to prove she can save. Despite a $50 weekly budget, her pantry is overflowing and her basement shelves are stacked high with food and household goods she says she paid next to nothing to buy. Her latest receipt from CVS shows a savings to date of $923.76; she’s spent just $3.82 so far this year.

“I do make a lot of money and save a lot of money shopping this way,” she said. “And I have a passion for teaching people about it.”

Space is limited for the class and residents are encouraged to pre-register. For more information, call LifeSpan at (513) 868-3210 or (513) 424-6888.
