A pet died in a house fire Saturday afternoon on Alter Road, Battalion Fire Chief Michael Muhl said.

Crews responded around 2 p.m. to the 6700 block to fire and smoke coming from the front of the house.

“Crews made a quick interior attack and contained the fire to the area of origin,” Muhl said.

A resident of the home was assisted to safety by a local bystander. That resident was not injured.

“I had talked him down to the stairs, to the bottom, and at that time people had showed up to help get him out of the house,” Rosemary Burks said.

The cause and damage estimate is unknown and under investigation.

“(Crews) are in the process of doing the investigation to determine the cause,” Muhl said.
