Dayton officer shot: Flags to be flown at half-staff to honor Det. Del Rio

Other public buildings and grounds throughout the state can fly the flags at half-staff at their discretion for the same period, DeWine said.

Dayton police Chief Richard Biehl announced Del Rio’s death Thursday afternoon.

The detective was critically injured Monday evening while serving a warrant as part of a DEA task force.

Funeral services will take place next week.

Multiple public officials throughout Ohio and the Miami Valley offered their thoughts and prayers to Del Rio, his family and the Dayton Police Department, including the following:

Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley:

“The entire Dayton community mourns with Det. Jorge Del Rio's family and colleagues. We are all grateful for his service and heroism. In the midst of this pain, we have heard many stories of his kindness, his dedication to service and his love for this community. The Commission and I hold the Del Rio family in our prayers.”
