Driver claiming to be victim is arrested

A woman who claimed she was the victim of a hit-and-run Wednesday night was arrested and jailed after police determined she was the one who committed the hit-and-run hours earlier.

Police stopped a Jeep Cherokee at Wilmington Avenue and Schroyer Road just after 10 p.m. on a call about an injury accident, Dayton Sgt. Eric Sheldon said.

Police arrived to find a passenger in the vehicle who appeared intoxicated. After some checking with police and inquiring about other accidents in the area, the driver who called police ended up under arrest and her passenger ended up in Miami Valley Hospital, Sheldon said.

“She called in, claiming she had been involved in a hit-and-run, but claimed she was the victim,” Sheldon said. “But it was quickly determined, after talking to crews downtown, that while she was involved in a hit-and-run, she was the suspect driver who had fled the scene."

The earlier accident occurred at Main and Stewart streets downtown, and no one was injured.

The woman, identified as Tasha Garner, 37, was taken to the Montgomery County Jail, where she’s detained pending charges stemming from the downtown accident, driving without a license and possibly more, Sheldon said. Garner already had numerous suspensions on her driving record, he said.

“She should never have been behind the wheel,” Sheldon said.

The passenger, who was only identified as a male, was taken to the hospital because of an illness unrelated to the accident, Sheldon said.

"It's possible she got scared," he said. "Or maybe thought if she distanced herself from the original crime, it might be a more believable story that she was the victim and not actually the one who committed the crime."
