Elementary students receive lesson in accounting, finances

Valley Forge kids also had chance to invest in market

HUBER HEIGHTS — Valley Forge Elementary School students participated in “Accounting for Kids” day on Nov. 12.

Twenty one volunteers from various accounting firms in the Dayton area came to Valley Forge Elementary to work with all fourth- and fifth-grade classrooms.

The students were taught some key terms used by accountants and other professionals in the financial sector and then learned about investing and the stock market.

Principal Matt Housh said students were given “money” and asked to invest in certain stocks in order to track the growth of their “portfolio.”

“Students had losses and gains during the game and were focused on how to make good financial decisions,” according to Housh.

Housh noted the project was very engaging and there was great feedback from students and teachers.
