Slone was a St. Marys police officer for 15 months beginning in 1995. The police department said he did not pass probation and was let go because of performance issues.
Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon and St. Marys Chief Gregory Foxhoven gave the following details about the incident:
At approximately 6 p.m. Friday, police and deputies began a low speed pursuit of a vehicle in the city of St. Marys after the sheriff’s office received a call that the driver had a gun and intended to shoot himself or others.
The vehicle pulled into the Rough Rider Express Marathon on South Street. Slone left the vehicle with a weapon and was shot by one of several deputies there. No officer was injured.
Slone was treated on the scene by officers until St. Marys Fire Department paramedics arrived. He was taken to Joint Township Hospital in St. Marys and a short time later pronounced dead. An autopsy will be performed by the Lucas County Coroner’s Office in Toledo.
Deputies involved in the incident will be placed on paid leave. The names of deputies involved in the shooting are not being released at this time.
The incident remains under investigation by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation.
