Greene County Public Library has received national recognition for the second year in a row in the 2010 Hennen’s American Public Libraries Ratings Index.

“It feels great, but the real credit for this goes to my staff, who work like crazy on behalf of the public,” said Karl Colón, director of Xenia Community Library. “And the real credit goes to the public.”

The Hennen rankings boil down to how well the library is being used, Colón said.

“We work hard to provide the best in books, programs and services to our public, but it’s the public that comes through the doors, it’s the staff that serves them. That generates the numbers that get you into the Hennen rankings.”

The Greene County Public Library is ranked No. 10 among public libraries serving populations of 100,000-250,000. The index rated 7,930 public libraries in the U.S. on measurements such as visitation, materials and funding. This is the fourth time the library system has been ranked a “Top 10 Library.”

There are seven locations in the Greene County Public Library system: Xenia, Beavercreek, Fairborn, Yellow Springs, Cedarville, Bellbrook and Jamestown. The library system was considered as a whole for the rankings.

On Sunday, May 16, the Beavercreek Community Library was bustling with activity just an hour after opening.

Alethea Childers searched for books while her husband, Joe, checked out classical CDs and their daughters used computers.

“I like the children’s department,” Alethea Childers said . “We home-school, so we get a lot of nonfiction books.”

“I’m pleased (with the library); it’s in a convenient location,” Joe Childers said.
