Group in Dayton gathers to read, remember King’s ‘Beyond Vietnam’ speech

A group in Dayton gathered Tuesday to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. speech "Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence."

Groups across the country staged public readings of the speech, delivered on April 4, 1967, to more than 3,000 at Riverside Church in New York City.

Historians have said the speech represented a turning point in the peace movement.

The New York Times characterized the speech as "the most politically charged" of King's life.

He was assassinated a year later, in Memphis.

Tuesday's event in Dayton was held on West Third Street downtown.
