Jewel joins forces with the MCESC

The Montgomery County Educational Service Center is partnering with a Grammy nominated singer/songwriter, Jewel, to promote the MCESC’s Social Emotional Learning Language Arts (SELLA) curriculum.

“Our hope is that by offering this curriculum to districts nationwide we can grow happy, healthy humans and in turn build strong communities one student at a time,” Jewel said.

Jewel is open about her difficult childhood and it has fueled her passion about spreading this message. She became a believer of the MCESC’s Social Emotional Learning Language Arts curriculum and its ability to help children tackle and overcome anxiety and depression.

“When I moved out at fifteen, I knew that statistically kids like me should end up repeating that cycle so I set out to beat those odds,” Jewel said. “So, I set out to put these skills to use to help more people. I am excited to announce this new partnership with the Montgomery County Educational Service Center in bringing you SELLA.”

The MCESC-designed Social Emotional Learning Language Arts curriculum covers one hundred percent of the national and Ohio writing standards as well as many of the other Language Arts standards. Currently, grades 4 through 6 are on the market with grades 2 and 3 currently in a pilot program.

“Teachers and districts as a whole have been asked to do more and more but district staffs spend a lot of time handling social and behavioral issues that have resulted from the lack of social emotional skills,” Shannon Cox, MCESC Superintendent said. “Our curriculum addresses those challenges using the child as the focus in their own learning.”
