Local woman tells extraordinary story of ordinary boy

Boone: The Ordinary is available at Amazon.com; BarnesandNoble.com; and for the Nook and Kindle e-readers

Lauren Brandenburg has set out to tell the extraordinary story of an ordinary boy.

The Waynesville mother of two has just written her first novel “Boone: The Ordinary.”

“It’s set in Georgetown, Kentucky where I grew up,” Brandenburg said. “It’s about a boy who just is ordinary. He does the same things day in and day out. Then weird things start to happen. He becomes entangled in a local urban legend and by the end of the book figures out how not to be so ordinary.”

Brandenburg first thought of the story two years ago while visiting family in Georgetown.

“Writing it started out as just a hobby and it grew from there,” Brandenburg said. “Now I have a whole trilogy planned out.”

Brandenburg would write during her children’s study times. While she used a computer to actually write the story, she’d map out chapters and the plot in notebooks, using a series of notes.

“It looks like scribbles, but it was my map,” Brandenburg said. “It’s how I got my thougths in order, even though the notes don’t look like they are in any kind of order.”

The book is aimed for teens and young adults, although like many books in the field, Brandenburg said it could be enjyed by pretty much everyone.

“I think teens will like the mystery and adventure aspect of it,” Brandenburg said. “There’s a lot of “National Treasure” like clues to be followed. But there are also underlying tones about faith others may pick up on and enjoy as well.”

Brandenburg is self-publishing her book through Westbow Publishing, which is a deivision of Thomas Nelson Publishing. If the book can sell enough copies, it could be picked up by a national publisher.

Brandneburg said she is hard at work on the book’s sequel and hopes to publish it in August 2013.

“Boone: The Ordinary” is available for purchase at Amazon.com, Barnesandnoble.com and is available on both the Nook and Kindle. Brandenburg will also be selling and autographing the book at 180 Cafe, 30 N. Broadway in Lebanon on Saturday, Sept. 29, during the Country Applefestival.
