Lottery security chief Jack O'Donnell says potential victims are receiving phone calls saying they've won a prize on the program and should expect a package delivered by courier. Later, they're contacted again and are told they'll have to meet the courier in a parking lot and should bring cash to pay processing fees and taxes.
O'Donnell says in a statement that victims risk having not only their money but also their identities stolen.
The lottery says it never asks winners to cough up cash to claim a prize.
The calls appear to come from a New York City area code. Anyone who's contacted is urged to call police immediately.
