Man found dead in Richmond apartment after couch catches on fire identified

The man who was found dead after an apartment fire in Richmond has been identified.

Michael Wagner, 64, died, according to fire officials.

Firefighters were called to the Genesis Apartments (formerly known as Country Club Apartments), 1032 S. 23rd St., when another resident in the complex smelled smoke about 11 p.m. When crews arrived on the scene and entered the apartment, they noticed the couch was on fire along with the carpet.

They quickly extinguished the fire with multiple fire extinguishers, said Battalion Chief Charlie Bartlett, adding that nothing else in the apartment was on fire.

Firefighters then found the body of a man who appeared to be in his 60s near the couch, Bartlett said. It’s not clear if the man died as a result of the fire, he said.

The couch was a total loss, and there’s heavy smoke damage in the apartment, Bartlett said.

Fire officials are working to determine the cause of the fire as well as the victim’s death, the battalion chief said.

We will continue working on this story, and we’ll bring you the latest information when it’s available.
