Meadows Lakes casting Hill of Horror to hook fright fans

Sisters get 20 volunteers to transform into ghouls and goblins to scare visitors to facility’s first-ever haunted trail attraction

MADISON TWP. — Rising up from a gravel path along the shorelines of a lake is a hill covered in trees. When darkness falls on this idyllic scene near the edge of town, something new and terrifying emerges.

Stony Meadows Fishing Lakes in Madison Twp. will be launching The Hill of Horror Halloween event Friday, Oct. 1.

Sisters Cindy Lycan and Melissa Sorrell said they had been stewing over creating their own haunted attraction for several years as a way to bring in new business during what is normally a slow time in the fishing industry.

While Lycan said she would describe most of the 63 acres surrounding Stony Meadows’ three man-made lakes as “therapeutic,” the hill situated just on the other side of the first waterway has always given her chills.

“It’s just a great spot because it’s just scary walking up there without anything in there,” Lycan said. “It’s haunting in itself.”

So the sisters have gathered more than 20 volunteers from their family and friends to transform into ghouls and goblins to scare customers brave enough to venture up The Hill of Horror.

It should take most residents about 30 minutes to trek through the unlit woods, which will feature several staging areas such as a graveyard and witches bubbling over a ghoulish brew.

And of course, there will be plenty of scares lurking in the dark.

As a new haunted attraction not too far from the popular Land of Illusion, Lycan said they are not scared of the competition.

“I don’t think anyone has anything like we’ve got,” she said. “There is no one I know who has got a Hill of Horror and a lot of times people like to go to more than just one thing for Halloween.”

Stony Meadows is located at 7798 West Alexandria Road. Admission to The Hill of Horror is $10. Parking, hot chocolate and coffee are free. The attraction will be open Fridays and Saturdays through Oct. 30 from 8 p.m. to midnight. For more information, call (513) 422-5291.
