Middletown excavating business nearing 50th year

Greg Martin got into the excavating business to live the dream his father had started in the mid-1950s, but found it much more rewarding than he ever thought.

The owner of Martin Excavating in Middletown said there is something special about creating something from nothing.

“Building something can be the most exciting thing in the world,” Martin said. “You start with nothing and finish with something.”

Martin and his wife and business partner Becky discovered that giving back to the community was almost just as rewarding as seeing something they created.

They’ve volunteered on community projects at the Armbruster Nature Preserve and Douglas Park among others.

“You end up creating something in the community and you get to see the results every day,” Becky Martin said. “It’s really rewarding to see that creation, particularly when it’s important to the community.”

Martin’s father Herb, who passed away earlier this year, began the business in Trenton in 1954 when he bought a backhoe from a friend.

Martin said his father had a farming background and enjoyed that kind of work. Martin went to work for his father while in high school, although he admitted it wasn’t as fun then because his friends were out “goofing off” while he was working.

“While at college, I developed a strong interest in the business side of things and I had dreams and goals of expanding this business,” said Martin, who earned a business degree from Wilmington College.

The business eventually spread its boundaries from inside Butler County to all of Southwest Ohio doing work from Cincinnati to Dayton to Wilmington.

“You have to see a brighter tomorrow if you are going to keep doing something,” Greg said. “If you stop seeing that, then it’s time to get out.”
