“By working with the Middletown Historical Society, we wanted to make sure that all of our newspaper clippings and photos from the Middletown Journal archives are preserved for public use,” Publisher Edwina Blackwell Clark said. “It is a treasure trove of history that future generations can look back on.”
Sam Ashworth, former director of the historical society and a board member, said the society obtained the Journal’s oversized negatives years ago, and recently moved 15 file cabinets of newspaper clippings out of the vacant building.
Ashworth said the clippings will be organized, and eventually be made available to those with memberships, which cost $10 a year. He said the old newspaper articles are invaluable to residents doing research on the city’s history.
Jim Stabler, president of the society’s board, called obtaining the Journal’s archives “the big find.”
The society, 56 S. Main St., is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday and by appointment. Call (513) 424-5539.
Ashworth called obtaining the Journal’s archives “just a good thing all the way around.”
He added: “It’s a great source for us to have and to add to whatever we already have.”
