Middletown man indicted for choking woman with phone cord

A Butler County grand jury has indicted a Middletown man accused of trying to strangle a female family member with a telephone cord and then raping her after she passed out.

James Tannreuther, 47, of the 600 block of Cleveland Street, could face up to 54 years in prison if found guilty of eight felony charges, including attempted murder and two counts of rape. Tannreuther has also been charged with two counts of felonious assault, domestic violence, violating a protection order and petty theft.

Butler County assistant prosecutor Kelly Heile said the attack allegedly occurred on Nov. 18 in Middletown. Police had to search for Tannreuther for several days because when the woman regained consciousness, he had vanished.

Tannreuther has previous felony convictions for non-support of dependants and receiving stolen property.

He was originally charged in Middletown Municipal Court with just the attempted murder, domestic violence and petty theft counts. After the grand jury heard the case, it approved the other charges, Heile said.

“The grand jury, based on testimony and evidence they received, determined (the additional charges) were appropriate to add,” Heile said. “That’s not out of the ordinary necessarily.”
