Montgomery County names new top building official

Montgomery County has named Robert Martin manager of building regulations to replace Maury Wycoff, who is retiring this month.

As the county’s top building official, Martin will oversee a team of building inspectors, plan examiners and administrative staff for the jurisdictions served by Montgomery County.

Montgomery County’s Community & Economic Development Director Erik Collins called Martin a “problem-solver,” in the county’s announcement.

“He sees the Building Regulations Department as a partner who can help you through a project, no matter if it’s a residential remodel or a large commercial expansion,” Collins said.

Martin has served the building regulations division for more than 15 years. Prior to the new job, he worked as an inspection supervisor. He has worked on major projects in the county, including Caterpillar, Proctor & Gamble, Austin Landing, the expansion of Trimble Navigation and GM’s recent DMax project in Brookville.

Home Builders Association of Dayton CEO Eric Farrell said he and area contractors look forward to working with Martin.

“He has a lot of experience, and he understands the needs of our membership,” Farrell said in a county news release.

Martin succeeds Wyckoff, who is retiring after 29 years with the county. During his tenure, Wyckoff helped launch efficiency initiatives, including an online permit system where applicants can track the status of permits and make online payments. He also played a major role during the permitting process following the May 2019 tornadoes and has been heavily involved in code development at the local, state, and national levels, according to the county.

Montgomery County handles permitting and inspections for all the county’s townships. Another nine jurisdictions contract with the county for the services, including Brookville, Huber Heights and Trotwood.

“Maury has done so much for Montgomery County,” Collins said. “He’s well-respected across the state, and he has taken our county to a higher level. I know Robert will continue to improve this division.
